Yes, this is the Euro Hit 40 show competition page! Three people a month win our packet of prizes. Just answer the question - on this very page - correctly.

The lucky winners - three names are chosen at random each month - win a Euro Hit 40 or a Radio Netherlands Worldwide T-shirt, a CD of the show on which Tim reads out their names, an RNW keyring and a fridge magnet of the Netherlands/Amsterdam (bought by Tim from a street market in Ye Olde Amsterdam!).

Here are the rules (there has been a RULE CHANGE effective 1 March 2011): 

 
RULE CHANGE: as of 1 March 2011 a maximum of 3 entries per identical email address will be allowed provided each email is from a different named person (different name). All subsequent entries - above 3 - from an identical email address will be disqualified. This change is to allow people with no email address to take part through a friend or family member who does have an email address.
Competitions are not open to RNW staff, their partners or members of their immediate families.
Winners will be notified by email of their win and again when their prizes are posted. Unfortunately, we do not confirm receipt of entries or inform those who have not been lucky when the names of the winners are drawn.
The names of the three winners are always announced in our monthly email, on this web page, in the programme itself and on our page at Facebook.com, but only stating their names and the towns/countries where they live. We do not use the email addresses of entrants to our competitions for any purpose other than our competitions, nor do we supply them to any third parties.

VOA Launches Internet-Based English Learning Program for Russian Speakers

Voice of America has a new on-line destination for Russian speakers who want to learn English.

The Russian edition of VOA’s popular goEnglish.me language learning program is now on-line and it is loaded with useful tools that makes learning English fun, and easy. The program is free.

What makes goEnglish.me so popular is that users get a glimpse into everyday American life, while learning things they might need if they were traveling or studying in the United States. The site, which also has editions for Farsi and Mandarin speakers, is interactive and users can download lessons and information for use later or to share with friends.

The site is aimed at Russian speakers who have some knowledge of English, but are interested in learning how it is spoken in everyday American life. It also includes forums, blogs and group pages to allow users to dig deeper into American society through conversation.

Students use a headset and microphone to converse with avatars in the goEnglish.me lessons. Each lesson has phrases and sentences along with short exams. As users become more advanced they hear more English and less of their own language.

VOA Director Danforth W. Austin says, “The Russian version of goEnglish.me is just the latest example in an expanding array of digital learning tools that visitors can find on our websites.” Austin says, “goEnglish.me is one more way for VOA, which employs an all-digital strategy to reach out to Internet users in Russia and the former Soviet Republics, to engage young Russians interested in dialog with Americans.”

DRM General Assembly

The DRM Consortium is to hold it’s 23rd annual General Assembly Meeting on the 7th - 8th March 2011 at the Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur. This is the first time that DRM have held the General Assembly in the Asia-Pacific region. It will precede the Digital Broadcasting Symposium (8th - 11th March) organized by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU).

RNW launches iPhone application in 9 languages

Radio Netherlands Worldwide has developed a free news application in nine languages for the iPhone. This application gives iPhone users 24-hour access to RNW’s latest internet output, including web articles, radio programmes, videos and podcasts. The application – called ‘RNW’- is available free of charge from the App Store.

The application provides news, background reports and cultural information from a Dutch perspective but aimed at a global audience, streamed from RNW’s websites. The application is available in Dutch, English, Spanish, French, Papiamento, Indonesian, Portuguese, Chinese and Arabic. It also gives users immediate access to the latest news from http://www.internationaljustice.nl, RNW’s international law website.

Czech Radio leads commemorations to mark 60th anniversary of Radio Free Europe broadcasts

The Czech Republic is preparing to mark the 60th birthday of the launch of Radio Free Europe broadcasts in Czech across the Iron Curtain to Czechoslovakia. The broadcasts were a key factor in telling people under communism not only what was really happening in their own country but also keeping them up to date about events in the West.

In May 1951 the broadcasts in Czech targeted at Communist Czechoslovakia from exiles in Germany began to be transmitted from the then West Germany. At the time, Joseph Stalin was in charge of the Soviet Union and his faithful follower Klement Gottwald had a firm grip on Czechoslovakia after taking control there three years earlier. The Cold War still threatened to blow up into a conflagration.

In Czechoslovakia, like most other Communist regimes, censorship was already in operation. Opponents were forced underground or to flee for their lives. One of those opponents was the first director of the Czech division of RFE, Ferdinand Peroutka. He was joined by other exiled journalists, for example, Pavel Tigrid.

DRM “At Home” in India

Following the announcement by the Indian government in the spring of 2010 that DRM is to be rolled out across India, leading members of the DRM Consortium, the DRM chair and vice-chair, with the chair and vice-chair of the Technical committee as well as the Asia-group chair and representatives from the BBC, TDP, Transradio, Digidia, Fraunhofer IIS, RFmondial and Analog Devices have taken part in a week of events linked to Radio Asia 2011 (February 21st -23rd) and the India Broadcasting Engineers Society, annual conference (February 24th -26th). Both events were held in New Delhi.

Among the highlights of this week of presentations, demonstrations and discussions were the excellently attended 'hands-on' DRM workshop, held on Monday February 21st at RAC2011 and the meeting with some of the Indian car manufacturers. The culmination of these events came on February 23rd with the launch of the Indian DRM Platform, an informal group of Indian stakeholders (broadcasters, network operators and manufacturers) whose aim is to raise awareness of DRM in India with the ultimate goal of bringing better, digital radio to new receivers and platforms for the Indian listener.

All these events will be discussed and reviewed in ten days time at the DRM General Assembly Meeting on the 7th - 8th March 2011 at the Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur. This will be the first time that DRM has held its key internal meeting in Malaysia.

The General Assembly is the largest decision-making body of the DRM Consortium. It meets once a year to oversee the Consortium’s activities and progress made in spreading knowledge on the use and implementation of DRM digital radio technology. The two day conference (7th-8th March 2011) will be attended by many DRM members and supporters from around the world who will not only review the work that has been undertaken, but will discuss the progress of DRM technology and the challenges faced when introducing digital radio.

At the end of the General Assembly, the DRM Consortium hopes to meet many DRM members and friends at a networking event organized just before Digital Broadcasting Symposium (8th -11th March 2011).

VOVNews broadcasts VOVTV programmes live on its website

VOVNews online newspaper officially broadcast live VOVTV programmes on its website on February 28.

With such an event, the newspaper has successfully accomplished broadcasting all VOV media online, including five radio channels, a print newspaper, the VOV Traffic channel and VOVTV.

2011 is the third year VOVTV programmes have been broadcasted on television nationwide, which marks VOVTV’s maturity in informing the public about the Party’s guidelines and policies and the State’s laws.

VOVTV now broadcasts 19 hours a day (from 5am to 24pm) and in the three years of its establishment, VOVTV has increasingly confirmed its position as one of the main information departments of VOV.

Through programmes covering the National Assembly and voters, and the Government and the people, updated news and information on politics, economics, society and culture have been efficiently provided to the audience.

Moving programmes about searching for revolutionary martyrs’ graves and audience feedback programmes were especially popular, receiving letters of gratitude and boosting people’s confidence in solving problems, dealing with complaints and meeting their expectations.

Entertainment programmes about films and hot music were also very popular with viewers.

VOVTV also coordinates with the VOV Traffic channel to produce programmes on traffic during rush hours in Hanoi and the northern region, and Ho Chi Minh City and the southern region.

Ly Thai Phuong, Deputy Director of VOVTV, said broadcasting VOVTV on the VOVNews online newspaper will help spread information more widely and quickly.

VOVNews continues to perfect its infrastructure, technology and equipment to raise the quality of its programming.
