ABC's Mark Scott awarded the Order of Australia

ABC Managing Director Mark Scott has been honoured with the Officer of the Order of Australia award, reports The Australian.

The honour is in recognition of his work as a media executive (Mr Scott has been managing director of the ABC since 2006; he was formerly editor-in-chief of Fairfax newspapers) and for his lower-profile role as an ardent supporter of grassroots initiatives to assist those in the community who are disadvantaged.

As a chief executive, Mr Scott has slept in the rough to highlight the plight of the homeless - he will do so again this Thursday in Sydney, for the annual St Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

When interviewed, Mr Scott said he was reluctant to accept the Queen's Birthday honour as one for him alone.

"I think in a way it's absolutely recognition for all the work the ABC is doing. It's obviously a team effort. I'm just one player in that," he said.

As to his community service, Mr Scott said: "It's actually a great privilege. I find I learn as much as I can contribute."

Mr Scott said the community service provided by the ABC in times of crisis was a source of some pride to him. "There are moments - the Queensland floods, the Victorian bushfires - when there is great relief that the ABC is there - the sure, calm, familiar voices at times of great stress are important.

"I don't think I've ever seen the ABC work better than through the floods and the cyclones at the beginning of the year."
