DAB radios put in new cars

European car makers are installing Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radios in new cars, says Aaron Olphert, manager of products and strategy at New Zealand broadcasting infrastructure company Kordia.

"News from Australia is (also) very positive, with around 400,000 receivers being sold since launch," he wrote on a geekzone.co.nz forum recently.

The developments suggest DAB and it's higher-standard cousin DAB+ might one day spread beyond Kordia's trials in Auckland and Wellington.

DAB+ promises better sound quality and other benefits.

"Feedback from people who are listening has been very positive," he said.

"Some consumers have even purchased receivers, even though this isn't a commercial service."

Content came from a range of broadcasters. There was no fixed planning for a commercial network in New Zealand, but this would not need to wait until television switched to digital, Olphert noted.

Broadcasting Minister Jonathan Coleman last week confirmed that analogue television would be turned off from September 2012 and end entirely in December 2013.
