Quality control may be the next big topic in broadcast production, but it is not easy to implement. On 21 & 22 June the EBU is holding a workshop at its headquarters in Geneva to help resolve quality-control issues broadcasters may face during implementation.
Broadcasters around the world are moving to file-based production, from camera to play-out server. At many points in this new process, chain errors can be introduced, due to human error or buggy software or incompatible implementation. How do you check for these errors? With which tools? How much human intervention is required? And what do you do when you find problems?
To help answer these questions, the EBU has established a Quality Control Group that draws up requirements for QC systems, creates an overview of QC tools currently being offered and advises on best practices for broadcasters implementing QC in their facilities. The group also intends to share files with QC test sequences, so broadcasters can check their systems. The EBU QC Group currently consists of about 60 industry representatives.
