Norway wins 2011 Eurovision Young Dancers

Daniel Modou Sarr from Norway has won the 2011 Eurovision Young Dancers contest organized by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU)*. A professional jury** selected the winner tonight in Oslo, who performed dance styles incorporating jazz, contemporary and hip hop. Viewers from across Europe watch the show either live or by deferred broadcast***. The competition is open to solo dancers aged between 15 and 20, from EBU Member broadcasters.

Daniel is 19 years old and from Oslo where he is in his second year at the Academy of Arts, specializing in jazz dance, contemporary and ballet.  He has to date won numerous national dance contests and performed extensively mainly in Norway.

“After a break of four years, the EBU revamped the format of the show and together with host broadcaster, Norwegian Member NRK put together an entertaining production with a fusion of different dance styles and extremely high level of talent,” said Vladislav Yakovlev, Executive Supervisor of the 2011 Eurovision Young Dancers.

Erik Solbakken, the popular Norwegian TV host and co-host of the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, hosted the show, which featured 10 dancers from the following countries and broadcasters: Norway (NRK), Germany (WDR), Sweden (SVT), The Netherlands (NPS), Croatia (HRT), Greece (ERT), Slovenia (RTVSLO), Portugal (RTP), Poland (TVP) and Kosovo (RTK).

The new format features solo performances by each participant, then a ‘group dance’, in which the dancers are divided into two groups. The jury then selects a finalist from each group and the two then perform a ‘dance-off’ dual to decide the winner.

The choreographer of the event is Ed Wubbe, one of Europe's finest artistic directors.
