Radio-in-a-Box powers Bangladeshi community radio

A new community radio station, named Lokobetar, in Barguna in southwest Bangladesh, has started test transmission using the ABU's Radio-in-a-Box. It is expected to start full transmission by mid-June.

The ABU has supplied two Radio-in-a-Box (RiB) units to UNESCO-Dhaka for community radio stations in Bangladesh.

The RiB is one of ABU's pioneer projects which began in 2005 with support from UNESCO. The ABU designs and develops these low-cost and easily portable units that can be used in remote locations for disaster relief efforts by community radio stations. In 2009, RiB was used in Indonesia after the Padang earthquake.

The RiB enables a versatile low-cost FM radio station complete with audio production and transmission capability that can be quickly and easily transported and deployed at the desired location.

ABU has supplied such units mainly to broadcasters in Africa and India, mostly through support from UNICEF and UNESCO.
