The ABC will launch a "popup" digital radio station this week to cover the parliamentary committee hearings featuring evidence from News Corporation executives.

The station, ABC UK Newsgate, will commence transmission at 8:00pm on Tuesday, broadcasting content from the ABC's radio archives about the Murdoch family.

From 11:30pm, it will broadcast the hearings from the culture, media and sport select committee. Evidence will be heard from Rebekah Brooks, the recently departed chief executive of News International, as well as Rupert and James Murdoch.

The ABC has used popup digital stations previously to allow for continuous coverage of breaking events in Australia, such as the Queensland floods, as well as overseas events such as the Christchurch earthquake without interrupting programming on their other stations.

ABC NewsRadio will also broadcast the select committee appearances for those without access to digital radio, while ABC News 24 will provide television coverage from 11pm.
