BBC Local Radio to follow Olympic Dreams hopefuls

BBC Local Radio stations are to chart the highs and lows of local Olympic hopefuls as they train and prepare for selection in the year leading up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Starting the week beginning 1 August, BBC Local Radio Olympic Dreams will follow the hopefuls, selected from a variety of sport disciplines and locations throughout England. Listeners will find out what it's really like competing with the best in the world, what drives these athletes and how they keep motivated.

As the hopefuls prepare to fulfil a lifetime dream, listeners will be treated to a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the slog of training, the emotions and expectations of the athlete, as well as the hard work of their team of trainers, friends and family.

The BBC hopes to bring Olympic competitors closer to their local communities allowing listeners to share in their dreams, ambitions, fears and achievements.

Catherine Hearne, West Midlands head of regional and local programming, says: "The London Olympics will touch the lives of all of our audiences as we celebrate the biggest world event in our country in a generation. The BBC locally will be following the games' hopefuls and their families every step of the way so you can keep up to date with their trials, tribulations and triumphs on our radio stations and websites."
