Georgian Finance Minister Dimitri Gvindadze pledged extra funding to Georgian Public Broadcasting (GPB) during a meeting with EBU Vice-President Claudio Cappon and Director General Ingrid Deltenre. The money will help wipe out a legacy of overdue debt which GPB's management inherited from its predecessors. For its part, the EBU will support GPB in its efforts to modernise its infrastructure and strengthen its position in the Georgian market.
During their visit to Tbilisi, the EBU delegation held talks with Jamie McGoldrick, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in the Georgian capital. Mr McGoldrick confirmed that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will provide nearly $75,000 in financial support to an EBU project of assistance for GPB.
To be conducted within the framework of the EBU's Special Assistance Project, and with the close cooperation and participation of GPB's management, the initiative will provide expert assistance to GPB in establishing a detailed and comprehensive strategy for 2012-2015. Work is expected to start next month.
The EBU delegation, which included Head of Member Relations and Special Assistance David Lewis, also met the European Union's ambassador to Georgia and the Director General of Rustavi, an Associate Member of the Union, during their visit.
