India's national broadcasters, Doordarshan (DDI) and All India Radio (AIR) have dug into their vast archives to release digital versions of performances by musicians and dancers, The Times of India reports.
The new CDs and DVDs are available at DDI and AIR offices around the country. They include an audio CD and DVD of a performance by a well-known Carnatic musician and violinist Lalgudi G Jayaraman.
Mr Jayaraman, who gave his first solo radio performance in 1947 at the age of 17, said that while private television channels were mostly showing commercially viable programming, AIR and DDI were still helping to develop classical music.
Carnatic music is a form commonly associated with the south of India, and the newspaper reported that the AIR office in the southern city of Chennai was unusually crowded yesterday, with stalls full of CDs and DVDs of classical performances doing brisk business.
The latest release means AIR has now released around 80 CDs while DDI has brought out around 100 titles and is going strong with plans to digitalise tapes and bring out more DVDs.
"The archive materials are one of the greatest contributions from AIR and DDI," said P V Krishnamoorthy, former Director-General of DDI.
