Volkswagen unveils redesigned Tiguan

Volkswagen has announced a revision to its Tiguan sports utility vehicle is due in September, with ordering for the new model opening today.

Building on the company's compact SUV design, the new Tiguan offers some impressive upgrades and increased flexibility over its predecessor. As well as the choice of two- or four-wheel drive, the Tiguan includes the option of two different front ends: one biased towards on-road driving with an 18 degree angle of approach, and an 'Escape' model designed for off-road use with a 28 degree angle of approach.

The two new front ends are complimented by a redesigned look dominated by horizontal lines on the front grille, bringing the car's look in-line with the company's other new models. At the rear, new two-part light clusters give the Tiguan the look of the Touareg with an L-shape layout.

Initially, four trim models will be available: the S, the SE, the Sport, and the aforementioned off-road-friendly Escape. As standard, all models will include 16in allow wheels, Climatic air conditioning, a DAB radio, and alarm. The SE trim upgrades to 17in allows, 2Zone electric air conditioning, Park Assist, iPod and Bluetooth support, plus a Fatigue Detection system. The Sport trim adds a multi-function steering wheel along with chrome-plated roof rails, heat insulated and tinted glass from the B pillar back, sport seats, front fog lights, and sports suspension.

Six engines are available, four of which are new to the Tiguan including a twin-charged 1.4-litre TSI offering 160PS - up from 150 in the previous generation - a 2.0-litre TSI with 180PS, and a 2.0-litre TSI with 210PS. Carbon dioxide emissions, the company claims, are either unchanged or improved from the previous generation.

Pricing starts at £21,085 and rises to £28,020, depending on model, trim, and features chosen.
