A press conference was held at Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) on July 1 to introduce the project “VOV radio programme for behaviour change to address climate change”.
The event was attended by VOV General Director Nguyen Dang Tien and Danish ambassador John Nielsen.
The serial radio drama “The Green Journey” is a Danish-funded project to help VOV produce a radio drama series to raise Vietnamese people’s awareness and capacity to respond to climate change, especially those who live in areas often affected by natural disasters.
With support from the government of Denmark, particularly the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and technical assistance from US-based non-governmental organization Population Media Centre (PMC), the 100-episode soap opera will be broadcast on VOV over two years, airing at 19:30 on VOV2 every Sunday. Audiences can also listen to the episodes on the VOVNews Online newspaper website at http://www.vov.vn.
Addressing the press conference, VOV Director General Nguyen Dang Tien said that the project is of great significance and in accordance with the national Target Programme to Respond to Climate Change. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the dissemination of information on climate change and improving public awareness of the people’s responsibilities related to the issue.
For his part, Ambassador John Nielsen said in recent years, climate change has become a major global concern. Vietnam is among the top countries in the world that will be most affected by global warming and climate change.
He also highlighted the Vietnamese Government’s commitment to cope with climate change to protect the country’s sustainable development and to contribute to global efforts. He is pleased to support VOV in producing this radio programme to raise people’s awareness of climate change and how to deal with its diverse impacts. This is the first time climate change has been dramatized as a radio soap opera where messages are delivered through real life stories that are familiar and understandable for everyone.
Earlier on July 1, Mr Tien spoke with Ambassador Nielsen and highlighted the cooperation between the two governments and with VOV in producing this radio series.
Mr Tien affirmed that in recent years, the Danish Government has been one of the nations that have actively financed projects on the environment and energy in Vietnam. Currently, over 100 Danish businesses are strategic cooperation and investment partners with Vietnam.
Ambassador Nielsen thanked Mr Tien for his warm reception and congratulated him on his new appointment as VOV Director General. Mr Nielsen expressed his hope that in the future, the Danish Government will continue to promote comprehensive cooperation between the two Governments and nations.
