Finally it came in, even if it was way too late. The much-awaited phase-III policy approved by the government last month though cheered up the industry, but it has too little to offer for the metros. This may spell some bad news for FM stations as that is where lies the pot of gold.
According to government officials, only four FM licences will be available for metros. Out of the total, two will be in Mumbai, one each in Delhi and Chennai while there is no licence up for grabs in Kolkata. Currently Mumbai has seven, Delhi and Chennai have eight stations respectively.
Meanwhile, in the A category there will be 19 licences with four in Hyderabad, three each in Kanpur and Lucknow, two each in Nagpur, Pune and Surat, and one each in Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Jaipur.
In other categories- B towns will have 29 licences, C towns 175 and D towns 579. Additionally 33 other revoked license of phase-II are also added in the new one.
With the phase III policy, government will extend FM radio services to about 227 new cities. This is in addition to the present 86 cities, with a total of 839 new FM radio stations in 294 cities.
