Student in Republic of Ireland Awarded Global Leader’s Scholarship

A participant in HCJB Global’s first summer internship program in Europe last summer has become the latest recipient of the Global Leader’s Scholarship at Moody Bible Institute (MBI) in Chicago.

Shane O’Regan participated in the mission’s “Eternal Impact” summer internship program last July. Since then he has developed a weekly youth outreach radio program called “Rebel Rhythms” on LifeFM, the mission’s partner station in Cork.

The four year, full-ride scholarship at MBI comes as a result of HCJB Global’s partnership with Moody Radio in the “Turn the Radios On” campaign last fall. The campaign also raised funds for more than 7,000 solar-powered, fixed-tuned radios for West Africa.

O’Regan was awarded the Global Leader’s Scholarship for his academic success, leadership qualities and passion for radio ministry. He is 20 years old and a native of Cork county.

“We are thrilled to receive Shane into our Moody community in just a few days,” said Bruce Everhart, marketing and development manager of Moody Radio. “It’s been gratifying to see God’s hand in selecting him as our Global Leaders Scholarship award winner. Our entire team at Moody Radio and MBI are looking forward to pouring into him these next four years. And not only that, but also learning how we can better serve global media outlets like the one Shane is coming from in Ireland.”

Roger Basick, an MBI graduate and HCJB Global missionary, described his fellow ministry worker as having a “sincere love for Christ that is contagious. We have had the privilege to witness his baptism in the frigid waters of the river near his home and to be inspired by the joy he has in consistently thinking of creative ways to reach his generation with media.”

“I am very thankful that Shane was awarded the scholarship to MBI to study communications,” added David Uhles, director of HCJB Global’s Europe/Eurasia Region. “When he attended the internship program in 2010, he made a deep impression on me. He displayed spiritual maturity beyond his years and a deep grasp of radio and how it can be used to influence many for Christ. Completing his training at Moody and finishing his degree will equip a deserving young man and potential leader for Ireland. I am confident this will prepare him to be used of God in significant ways in the future.”

O’Regan will be traveling to Chicago this month to begin his studies. During his four-year course he will also be interning at Moody Radio. His goal is to return to Ireland to minister to his people via radio.

He conveyed his passion for radio ministry in his scholarship application. “Radio is an extremely powerful medium influencing people of every race, status and religion,” O’Regan wrote. “The use of media such as radio has proven to be an effective and powerful means to communicate the gospel to those who would never otherwise come in contact with it. The prospect of being trained and equipped in such a ministry excites me greatly!”
