EBU engineer Yvonne Thomas wins ARD/ZDF award

EBU 3DTV specialist Yvonne Thomas has won a prominent technology award that aims to highlight and encourage the contribution of women in a traditionally male-dominated world.

Yvonne came first in the ARD/ZDF-sponsored "Women and Media Technology" awards, which were presented on September 2 at the IFA 2011 consumer electronics convention, in Berlin. The top three spots received cash prizes of 5,000, 3,000 and 2,000 euros.

German EBU Members ARD and ZDF sponsor the annual awards, which praised Yvonne's outstanding Diploma thesis, titled "An investigation of stereoscopic perception depending on different display sizes and a study of 3D acceptance".

Yvonne said she felt proud to have been spotted as a young woman making inroads into a male-dominated world.

"This is only the third  year of the ARD/ZDF prize, and I'm glad to be one of the early winners," she said."I hope I can serve as an example for other women working in technology. The ARD/ZDF award is a great opportunity for female talent in the technology sector to get a good start and find good jobs in the broadcasting industry."

Yvonne added that she will encourage other women in her field to put their names forward for the award as it is important for women to hold their ground in technology.

Second place went to a thesis on "Development of a User Interface Concept for Viewing Temporal Video Annotations", and a paper titled "Efficiency of Time-Frequency-Slicing with handheld reception" came third.

Since early 2011 Yvonne has been working in the EBU Technology & Development department as a project engineer focusing on 3D technologies.

The EBU warmly congratulates Yvonne on her prestigious achievement.
