EBU extends 5-year distribution agreement with Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

The EBU has renewed its distribution agreement for the TV and radio broadcast rights with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO) for an exclusive package for EBU Members of three classical concerts.  The EBU has successfully distributed the most watched classical concert on TV, the New Years Concert, to more than 40 countries over the past 3 years and now the agreement has been extended to 2017.

EBU Director General, Ingrid Deltenre and EBU TV Director a.i., Joergen Franck, met with Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Clemens Hellsberg, and Business Manager (VPO), Dr. Dieter Flury to sign the contract in Lucerne on 12 September.

Joergen Franck hailed the signing as "an excellent continuing collaboration and creative exchange for the benefit of EBU Members".

The concert package includes:
  • The internationally popular New Year’s Day concert from the Musikverein concert hall, Vienna.
  • The annual Summer Night Schönbrunn concert at the Schlosspark Schönbrunn, Vienna.
  • A special concert relayed from different international locations each year: In 2009 it was held at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and in 2010 at the Cankar Hall, Slovenia, hosted by RTVSLO. In 2011 it took place at the National Auditorium of Music, Madrid and was hosted by RTVE
