RRI New Competition for listeners “Busteni, the Jewel in the Foothills of the Caraiman Peak”

Dear listeners, we invite you to join the brand-new prize-winning competition run by Radio Romania International entitled “Busteni, the Jewel in the Foothills of the Caraiman Peak”, which is devoted to one of the most popular mountain resorts in Romania. Situated some 135 km away from Bucharest, in the Prahova Valley, the resort of Busteni, with its average altitude of 850 m, lies at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains and provides spectacular views and many opportunities for leisure.

Surrounded by mountains, the resort was the site of military clashes in 1916, during World War One. Perched on the top of the Bucegi Mountains, at an altitude of almost 2,300 m, stands a 25-metre high commemorative monument known as the Cross of the Nation’s Heroes, which was built between 1926 and 1928 at the initiative of Queen Marie to commemorate World War One’s fallen heroes. The list of important tourist attractions in Busteni includes the memorial house of writer Cezar Petrescu, the Cantacuzino Castle, the Princely Church, which was founded in 1889 by King Carol I and Queen Elisabeth, a monument entitled “The Last Grenade”, the Urlatoarea waterfall, the rock formations known as the Old Women and the Sphinx and the nature reserves: Bucegi National Park and Poiana Crucii. In wintertime, Busteni is the perfect destination for beginner and advanced skiers thanks to its modern ski slopes. In Busteni the winter season lasts from December until April.

We invite you to follow us on short wave on RRI, at www.rri.ro as well as on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. Give correct answers to several questions in writing and you can be the lucky winners of our competition. Just make sure you send your entries by the 15th of December 2011, postdated.

We have two grand prizes up for grabs consisting of two 7-day holidays for two with full board at the Alexandros Hotel in Busteni in the first half of February 2012. The Days of the Town of Busteni are held around that time near the popular Kalinderu ski slope, an event that also features the Ice Climbing World Championship and World Cup.

Our competition is sponsored by the Alexandros Hotel in Busteni, in Prahova County.
As usual, you will need to cover your own transport fees outside Romania and the cost of the visa for Romania, if you need one. If you don’t win one of the two grand prizes, there are still a lot of other prizes offered by our partners and sponsors, namely the Busteni Municipality and the Aurel Stroe Cultural Centre in Busteni.

And, here are the questions you need to answer in order to win:

  • What is the geographical position of the Busteni resort?

  • Mention at least 3 tourist attractions in Busteni or nearby.

  • What is the name of the most popular ski slope in Busteni?

  • Mention several other mountain resorts in the Prahova Valley.

  • Please write to us about what made you enter our competition and, if possible, also mention your sources of information other than our station, website and Facebook page. Write to us at Radio Romania International, 60-64 General Berthelot Street, sector 1, Bucharest, PO BOX 111, code 010165, fax us at 0040213190562, or email us at engl@rri.ro. We’re looking forward to your answers by 15th December 2011, postdated. The names of the winners will be announced early in January 2012 so they have time to prepare their trip to Busteni.
