In the wake of havoc wreaked by torrential rains and floods in most parts of Sindh province, it has been decided that vigorous efforts should be made through broadcast media to disseminate information and highlight plight of displaced people, said Dr Abdul Jabbar, Chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), The News reported.
He said this at a meeting with Murtaza Solangi, Director-General of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation and representatives of private FM radios in Sindh at the Pemra Regional Office in Karachi on Tuesday.
It was decided that free radio transistors would be provided to the flood victims to enable them to gain access to relief information. Dr Abdul Jabbar said local FM operators would maintain close coordination with district coordination officers to arrange various charity programmes to collect donations.
Mr Solangi assured full support in sharing information between PBC and Pemra licensed private FM radios. He said that Pakistan Radio would provide FTP and satellite links to private radio broadcasters to run simultaneous awareness campaigns through their FM stations. It was decided that special programmes would be created in Sindhi, Urdu, Seraiki and other local languages to inform victims on relief efforts.
Radio Pakistan has also launched an online campaign to collect donations for the nine million Sindh flood victims. For details, log on to radio.gov.pk
