ABC Australia, 13 February, 2012, On World Radio Day February 13th, ABC Rural Radio is reflecting on why radio is important - and we've found that over 70 years of broadcasting, radio has warned of danger; told people to flee floods and fires, or helped halt the spread of animal diseases. Rural programs in Australia began around the time of World War II, with an aim to help improve farming and produce more food. But it wasn't all serious. With the radio serial The Lawsons in the 1940s, Gwen Meredith's brief was to make her farming characters drop new crop varieties into the conversation. "The rockmelons have been a Godsend! Great success they are." "It was because mum used that great Number 45 variety, they're built for mildew resistance."
