The EBU goes backstage at The Met

EBU radio broadcasters were treated to a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni and a backstage tour of The Metropolitan Opera of New York (MET) to mark annual Broadcasters' Day.

The performance was broadcast to a total of 3.1 million listeners in 19 countries - 17 live - and is one of 22 productions offered by the MET to the EBU during the 2011-2012 season.

EBU Director General, Ingrid Deltenre, met with the General Manager of the MET, Peter Gelb, to discuss the success of the EBU's transmissions to public service radio broadcasters and their audiences.

Other topics included the EBU proposal to use its Euroradio satellite network to bring the MET operas in HD to European cinemas; the availability of video recordings of operas for EBU TV Members; initiatives to make photos, audio interviews and video clips available for Radio website publication and MET support for the management of the Internet domain '.radio' by the EBU.

The parties stressed the benefits of the partnership. "The broadcasts still attract strong audiences after 20 years of collaboration," said Ms Deltenre, "satisfying a demanding but extremely loyal audience of opera lovers."

The MET also unveiled its 2012-2013 season, which will once again be offered live to EBU Radio Members. The program will focus on commemorating the bicentenaries of composers Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi.
