Swiss broadcasting could cut World Radio Switzerland

The Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) may drop this station, WRS. Public broadcasting executives are looking at either closing WRS down or selling it.

Rumors began circulating late last week and the SBC director general Roger de Weck met with WRS employees on Monday.

De Weck said the company needs to cut back and is reexamining its priorities.

He said an English-language radio isn’t part of the core mandate of Switzerland’s public broadcaster.

The SBC bought WRS, which was then World Radio Geneva, in 2007 to transform it into a national English-language radio.

Public broadcasting executives will make a recommendation on WRS’s fate to the board of directors in June.
