Dodoma — SOME 18bn/- are needed to rehabilitate buildings housing the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) studios in Dar es Salaam.

The Deputy Minister for Regional Administration and Local Government, Mr Aggrey Mwanri told the National Assembly on Tuesday that the government was working in finding funds to facilitate rehabilitation of TBC buildings.

Mr Mwanri, who responded to a question on behalf of the Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, noted that the government plans to get finances from social security funds.

He was responding to a question by Mr Juma Nkamia (Kondoa South - CCM) who wanted to know government's plans to rehabilitate and improve TBC buildings. The former journalist with TBC also noted that despite the contribution of TBC to the country, the company was operating in outdated facilities.

Mr Mwanri admitted that most of TBC buildings were constructed 50 years ago and that for a long time now there has not been any meaningful rehabilitation due to meagre budget. He also noted that the building housing TBC's Mikocheni studios is semi-finished and that TBC management has tried to look for funds from the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

"The government is planning to guarantee TBC in accordance to the Government Loans, Guarantees and Grants Act, 1974 as amended in 2004 so that it can secure loans from financial institutes," he said.
