Formula 1 coverage on BBC Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra

Radio 5 live and 5 live sports extra will have full commentary of practice sessions, qualifying and the live race itself as one of the key dates in the sporting calendar - the British Grand Prix - comes to Silverstone.

BBC Radio 5 live sports extra will have commentary from both practice sessions from 9.55am on Friday before on Saturday 7 on Radio 5 live commentary of race qualifying, with the race itself on Sunday 8 July. 5 live sport will run its usual pre-race weekend Formula 1 show, previewing the action from Silverstone and reflecting on the practice sessions.

The 5 live team of James Allen, pit lane reporter Jennie Gow and F1 driver and pundit Jaimie Alguesuari will offer commentary and expert analysis. After the race the chequered flag podcast will summarise all the action from the weekend.

To complement Radio 5 live’s F1 commentary, the station also has a one-off motoring magazine show 5 live Drives, bringing all the latest news, gossip, road tests and interviews from the world of motoring.

Hosted by car loving presenter and actress Lisa Rogers and award-winning motoring journalist and broadcaster Alistair Weaver, 5live Drives promises to be an entertaining and informative road trip.

Along the journey, the programme casts a critical eye over the British car industry - once proud home to giants like Triumph, Austin and Rover. What does the future now hold for the business of motoring in Britain? Secretary of State for Business Vince Cable, F1 boss Ross Brawn and BBC business editor Robert Peston join the debate.

Not everyone can drive like Lewis Hamilton, but much of the technology used in Formula 1 helps shape the design and development of our ordinary road cars, including paddle shift gears and numerous safety features. But notwithstanding the F1 influence, what exactly will the cars of tomorrow be like? How close are we to a world where cars can drive themselves, are kitted out with wifi or can even take to the skies? 5live Drives will separate fact from (science) fiction with a fascinating glimpse into the world of future motoring.

And what of the cars of today? The station will be road testing some of the hottest new models of the past year, including the Porsche Boxster, Volkswagen Up and Range Rover Evoque. Lisa also spends a week with one of the latest electric cars, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV – how practical is greener motoring and is she in for a shock or a buzz?

In these economically challenging times, Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis is on hand to help listeners save cash on their car bills, with tips on cutting insurance premiums, saving on forecourt fuel prices and other valuable advice to make your motoring pound travel further.

And with traditional investments like stocks and shares, saving accounts and pensions declining in real terms, can buying a classic car provide a recession busting alternative? Can you really own your dream car and make money?

5 live Drives promises to be great listening for Britain’s 40 million plus motorists, with its compelling mix of studio chat, news, features and road tests - and with the buzz of Silverstone in the air, the show provides the perfect precursor to live commentary of the race itself on Sunday July 8 from 1.00pm.
