Radio communication has for many years been an important means of communication in the country.
Despite the fact that we have many radio stations in the country, be
it community radio stations or private FM stations, Gambians still find
it hard to get more current news on air.
However, there are very few who try to give more news on the events.
As the country joins the rest of the world in celebrating the World
Radio Day today, we call on the government to consider reopening one of
the most vibrant community radio stations, Teranga FM.
It used to not only review major newspapers but also organise programmes that were highly welcomed by the population.
Today is a day to celebrate radio as a medium; to improve
international cooperation between broadcasters; and to encourage major
networks and community radio alike, to promote access to information and
freedom of expression over the airwaves.
As radio continues to evolve in the digital age, it remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide.
We encourage our radio stations to always engage in discussions on topics that affect the lives of Gambian people.
Once more, we salute the efforts of all radio broadcasters for their
commitment and hard work encourage them to keep the momentum.
As it has always been said information is a very important tool in national development.
