A week-long news training workshop for staff of Radio Television Malaysia began today in Kuala Lumpur.
The event is being held under the Asiavision Advisory Service, which provides fully-funded training for members of the ABU's daily news exchange.
Conducted by Matt Walsh of Media Advisers Asia, the workshop will see two groups of RTM journalists each undergoing two-and-a-half days of training. More than 50 people will take part.
The Director ABU News, Alan Williams, told participants that public broadcasters such as RTM could compete effectively with international news channels by providing comprehensive local news coverage - something the international channels did not.
Similar training will take place in Kabul next month for Asiavision's two members in Afghanistan, RTA and Saba TV.
Asiavision brings together 22 broadcasters in 19 Asian countries. They exchange more than 9,000 news items a year by satellite and file transfer.
