NHK drama wins prize at Monte Carlo fest

Japanese public broadcaster NHK's The Threads of Our Hearts was awarded the AMADE Prize during the 51st Monte Carlo Television Festival, which was held in Monaco from 6-10 June.

The drama revolves around Akito, who has been the ears and voice of his deaf mother, Reiko, since he was a child. Reiko harbours the dream of Akito becoming a professional pianist but the youth doubts his abilities and his mother's expectations become a burden. When Reiko disapproves of his relationship with a deaf girl, Akito begins to forge his own path in this heartwarming tale about a mother and son's relationship.

In his acceptance speech, Director Mitsuhiro Higashiyama said: "I'd like to dedicate it to the people who showed me the beauty of sign language and introduced me to the rich culture in the region where the drama is set.

"The message behind the drama is that we should treasure the connections we have with the people in our lives. And it's a message that I hope will resonate with people in Japan as we work together to get through a time of great hardship."

NHK's Emergency Report: The Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, which was nominated in the news item category, received an honorable mention at the award ceremony.

At last year's Monte Carlo awards, NHK won the Golden Nymph award for Best TV Movie for its drama Goldfish.
