The 50-episode NHK historical drama series Princess Atsu has been licensed to Romania's Antena TV Group through NHK Enterprises (NEP).
With its gripping plot, great storytelling, an impressive cast, and gorgeous costumes, Princess Atsu attained the highest ratings for a drama series during the year it was broadcast in Japan. It has also been one of NHK's most internationally successful dramas. The period drama has been well received in Asia and has been distributed to seven countries, including Brunei, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
Princess Atsu revolves around the true story of a woman who became the wife of a shogun (a hereditary commander-in-chief in feudal Japan). She later saved the capital, Edo, from a devastating civil war and opened the path to Japan's modernisation.
NEP Corporate Officer Shigeru Aoki said: "I'm delighted that Princess Atsu is going to be aired in Romania. Although the story is set in 19th-century Japan, it's a Cinderella story; the tale of a girl whose dignity, political savvy, and enthusiasm for life carry her through an age of upheaval. I'm sure it will resonate with European viewers just as it has with viewers in Asia".
Princess Atsu will make its European debut this summer on Euforia Lifestyle TV. Its Channel Manager Florin Nicoara said: "Euforia TV is a lifestyle channel targeting women. We are certain that the story and main characters of Princess Atsu will appeal to our viewers".
