VOV Online is an inevitable development in the digital era. Therefore, it is important to build a proper model to create an information channel which can combine four means of journalism: radio, printed press, television and online newspaper.
VOV Online provides information in the faster but most effective and interactive way. Along with the development of Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV), VOV Online is taking shape.
At the eighth Asia Media Summit (AMS8) hosted by VOV in Hanoi on May 22-25, delegates have affirmed that in the digital era, radio and television broadcasting is no longer in the shape of a “square box” placed in a room but a multimedia channel that can provide information in the fastest but most effective way to gradually through different programmes and packages instead of traditional boring commercials interlaced with other programmes.
VOV Online has been following a roadmap for VOV Online in the 2011-2010 period which is part of a development strategy to turn VOV into a strong national radio station and secure a firm position in the international arena, while making it possible for Vietnam to become a strong IT nation by 2020.
VOV has four means of journalism including radio, printed press, television and online newspaper in getting and processing information from different sources domestic and international such as from its 14 bureaus, and other broadcasting channels. VOVNews Portal produces more than 10,000 news stories and articles a year. To be more exact, eight broadcasting channels VOV1, VOV2, VOV3, VOV4, VOV5, VOVNews, VOVas, VOVTV contribute 200 hours of programming via the national satellite VINASAT-1 to all parts of the country and other regions in the world.
In addition, Vietnam’s telecommunications infrastructure has developed strongly with nearly 38 million internet users. The Government of Vietnam has drawn up a long-term strategy to develop information. The Ministry of Information and Communication has also developed projects to bring information far and wide even to the remotest wards and communes in the countryside. In recent times, e-government has proved effective in improving administrative procedures, especially through online conferences from the central down to local levels. The country has 67 radio and television stations with VOV and VTV being the core agencies which provide nearly 200 radio and television programmes. In addition, the pay TV system also provides 75 foreign TV channels.
VOV Online is an indispensable development in the digital era. VOV is sparing no effort to create a modern information channel that can combines all four means of journalism. The channel will help attract audiences, and meet international standards so that users can use their mobiles, computers or ipads to access information on the website.
Therefore, it is necessary to upgrade IT infrastructure including increasing the capacity of transmitting stations and computer system. In addition, it is also important to train a contingent of qualified reporters, editors and professional administrators so that they can work more effectively in coordination with press agencies.
In short, the most important thing is to develop human resources in a sustainable manner for a national radio worthy of its important role as a multimedia agency.
