The 4th News Technology Seminar was held in Istanbul on 29 & 30 March. This seminar attracted a record number of over one hundred professionals, both journalists and engineers from EBU Member organizations. The event was hosted by the EBU's Turkish Member TRTand provided a forum for Members to share their experiences with new technologies as they search for new, cost-effective ways to produce and deliver multiplatform content.
The highlights of this year's meeting included a session on low-cost news gathering and transmission equipment, with production tests from BBC, RAI, and SVT; a session by RTBF and Radio Bremen on the convergence of internet and television, as well as presentations on social media by BBC Monitoring and Czech TV.
The purpose of the seminar was not only to discuss new technologies but also to challenge them, to make sure the systems/technology will work for journalists, and journalism. An excellent example of that was brought by the News Technology Subcommittee chairman Benoit Balon-Perin who launched the Dalet Users group including several broadcasters, to improve relations and support from the vendor.
Participants also heard updates on the progress of two key EBU initiatives, the Transition-to-File and Future Network Architecture projects, and received an invitation to join a newly launched EBU Strategic Programme on Integrated Media Production.
EBU Media Director Annika Nyberg stressed the importance of Members active, continued involvement in these projects, stressing that their feedback is crucial to the success of these projects and is essential in ensuring that these solutions best meet Members needs .
