Commercial Radio Australia says the takeup of digital radio in this country is progressing faster than expected.
Australians have bought 784,478 digital radios since they were launched in 2009, according to figures from Commercial Radio Australia's Digital Radio Industry Report 2012, released on Monday.
Moreover, some 1.2 million people listen to digital radio in an average week, up 400,000 from a year ago.
'Digital radio sales and listening have increased despite one of the worst retail climates for decades,' Commercial Radio Australia chief executive Joan Warner said in a statement.
The Digital Radio Industry Report 2012 said nearly one in 10 Australian households now had a digital radio, which was launched two and a half years ago in 2009.
This rate of growth was only exceeded by the take-up of Pay-tv, the report said.
'Digital radio household penetration is forecast to reach 16 per cent by December 2013 and 18 per cent by June 2014 - one of the fastest take-ups of any new technology in Australia,' the report said.
Digital radio was currently available in Australia's five mainland metropolitan capitals.
Ms Warner said a proposed timeline for a rollout in regional areas was currently being developed for discussions with the federal government.
