Zimbabwe: Star FM Plans to Go National

Star FM will soon roll out a plan to make it a national radio station, general manager Mr Admire Taderera has said. Addressing advertisers and marketers at a breakfast meeting in Harare yesterday, Mr Taderera said there were plans to install transmitters along the major highways to cover the breath and length of Zimbabwe.

"We cover slightly under half of the country because by law it is Transmedia which has the mandate to carry the signals, but Zimpapers Talk Radio has secured its own transmitters so that we cover most parts of the country soon," he said.

"In about two months' time we should have a transmitter along the busy Beitbridge-Harare highway before we move to Matabeleland South, North and the Midlands.

"By December, we are hoping that Masvingo will be online."

Mr Taderera said Star FM was one of the best and digitally equipped stations in Africa.

"We have the state-of-the art equipment, quality production house and some of the talented voices," he said. Mr Taderera said some of the best presenters like Tich Mataz who once worked at radio stations abroad were with Star FM.

He said since Zimbabwe exported the likes of Mataz, Ian Sigola and Alice Chavunduka in the 1990s, only one presenter Tony Friday managed to make it outside the country.

Mr Taderera said Star FM would be available internationally via online streaming.

"We are still going through the process of licensing and once we get our license to stream online from BAZ then we will be going international."

He confirmed that the response on the station has been overwhelming since broadcasting three weeks ago.

"We have had massive response from advertisers and we are not going to take that for granted, but continue working hard and creating ways to keep our audiences logged in," he said.
