Durban radio listeners will be spoilt for choice this month as one of the popular radio stations Durban Youth Radio 105.1 FM, makes a come back to the airwaves next month.
The community station which caters for the youth of Ethekwini was forced to close more than two years ago, after experiencing financial problems which resulted in the radio station losing equipment and premises to operate from.
The station was eventually thrown out of the Durban’s Workshop while signals company,SENTECH, confiscated its broadcast material and equipments.
Sthembiso Sibisi, acting head of the station, said they had turned the corner and had now secured a number of financial backers and they would resume broadcasting.
“After the station was forced to fold a group of DJ and announcers formed a group that tried to revive the station. Outside funding has been sourced and we have paid both SENTECH and a new broadcast venue and we are confident that when we start next month, the sky will be the limit,” he said.
Sibisi said the station has been an integral part of the broadcasting industry and was a launching pad for the illustrious careers of people such as Lucky Sefatsa , Khetha Gwala, Sipho “Sgqemeza” Mbatha, Zama Zungu and Portia Gumede, the producer of Mzansi Magic’s Inkaba, Home Affairs and TV productions and many others.
“We felt we cannot just watch the station to die like that. We are confident that we will continue where we left off and become a station of choice for many young people in the city,” he said.
Sibisi said the station was still talking to a number of other sponsors and to ensure that it will be financially stable when it takes to the air.
In its heyday, the station was renowned for playing cutting edge music alongside sports and social commentary.
