In December 2012 Fiji was battered by the ferocious tropical cyclone
Evan which not only uprooted trees and homes, ripped roofs off buildings
and caused widespread power outages but also did not spare the Fiji
Broadcasting Corporation (FBC). It left a trail of destruction to its
equipment and accessories out of which most of them were beyond repair.
According to Mr Riyaz Sayed Khaiyum, Chief Executive Officer of FBC, “This
cyclone has really hit our bottom line and we are now in dire need for
equipment that was not budgeted for so soon after the completion of our
upgrade project. The most damage caused was in the Western Division of
the mainland, in particular the Sabeto site as the roof of the
transmission building hut has been blown off. We are still unable to
provide a permanent service in parts of the country and hope that we can
get assistance to overcome this dire predicament.”
On behalf of FBC, we from the AIBD
secretariat urge our colleagues in the AIBD family to assist our
colleagues in their request to get them back to be operational to full
capacity soon for the benefit of their listeners and viewers in Fiji
especially the people in the remote areas.
FBC is even more than willing to accept
second hand equipment including older cameras. Please refer to the list
of equipment that is needed urgently as Fiji will continue to experience
the cyclone season for some months yet.
Any member who is willing to assist is most welcome to contact Mr Riyaz Sayed Khaiyum at his e-mail rskhaiyum@fbc.com.fj or Tel: (679) 3314333 or FAX: (679) 3220990
