Nautel Makes Big Indian DRM Sale

Transmitter-maker Nautel has announced a large order from Indian public broadcaster Prasar Bharati for its All India Radio arm. Nautel President and CEO Peter Conlon described it as the largest order in Nautel history.

AIR is building out its Digital Radio Mondiale network and will be using Nautel transmitters in it. Nautel says Prasar Bharati/AIR is buying 27 NX series AM transmitters for use in 27 different locations across India.

The transmitters range in power in from 100 kW–300 kW. The order consists of, originally, six NX300 300 kW units along with a recently added 10 NX200 200 kW and 11 NX100 100 kW transmitters.

Conlon added that the order “reinvigorates medium-wave transmission and underlines the coverage advantages of the AM band which has been languishing in many parts of the world. For the broadcast industry as a whole, this is an unabashed validation that radio is a medium that has a place in our mixed media world for decades to come.”

Nautel’s Indian rep, Comcon, was the middleman. Altronic Research and Kintronic Labs are supplying transmission support products and service to the project as well.
