Mentor Shala, 37, has been appointed Director General of Radio
Television Kosovo (RTK) with immediate effect. Deputy director general
since March 2010, he succeeds Sylejman Shaqiri, whose three-year
mandate has expired.
Shala, who was among seven candidates considered by the RTK Board on Thursday 24 January, lists his three urgent goals as:
- Launching a new RTK channel in Serbian by April
- Completion of investments for digital production and distribution
- Securing of sustainable financing for RTK.
Before becoming deputy director general, Shala worked in the news department of RTK - finally as editor-in-chief.
EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre wished Mr Shala every success in his new job.
"The EBU has a special place in its heart for your organization after
we took part in its establishment after the Kosovo war," she wrote. "We
look forward to taking forward our relationship under your leadership."
RTK was established by the EBU in 1999 in the damaged premises of Radio
and Television Pristina under a mandate from the United Nations and the
OSCE. The aim was to provide impartial news and information to the
population of Kosovo during the process of transition to peace and
democracy. RTK broadcasts in Albanian, Serbian, Turkish, Bosnian, and
Roma.
RTK will be one beneficiary of an EU-financed EBU action plan now being
rolled out by the EBU's Partnership Programme under the Memorandum of
Understanding signed by the EBU and European Union. The plan is designed
to strengthen the public service media of EU accession countries,
including Kosovo.
A regional conference devoted to the topic of public service media and Roma minorities is scheduled to be held in Pristina on 9-10 April in cooperation with RTK.
