A television and radio station in the Malayu (Yawi) dialect was officially launched in the deep southern province of Yala on Thursday, aimed at creating better understanding among the people.
The station, which is officially called "Voice of the People," was
jointly founded by the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre
(SBPAC), relevant government agencies and civic groups.
Public participation has been encouraged to create content and manage the station in order to communicate more fully with the Malayu speaking population and prepare for the Asean Economic Community in 2015. Malayu is the primary spoken dialect of the Thai Malay ethnic group in Thailand's far South along the border with Malaysia.
The Malayulanguage television is broadcast for half an hour every day from 8 to 8.30pm via Cband satellite while the 24hour radio programme can be heard at FM 88.75 MHz, Thai News Agency reported.
Tawee Sodsong, SBPAC secretary general, said the Malayu television and radio station is the brainchild of the government and was initiated several months ago. Preparations for its implementation have been undertaken quietly on the campus of Rajabhat Yala University where the station is located.
The government normally communicates with southern people in the Malayu dialect three hours a day through the armyrun TV Channel 5 and a radio station of stateowned TV Channel 11.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra earlier said the existing channels were insufficient and ordered more communication outlets in the Muslimdominated provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.
"The new TV station is launched to honour the use of Malayu, which is one of Asean's languages. As we move towards the Asean Economic Community, participation by the peoples, educational institutes and civic organisations should be encouraged," Pol Col Tawee said.
