[Gympie, Australia] No radio: residents in dark

Craig Warhurst
DURING times of flood, local radio station 4GY normally provides a vital service in getting information to the public.

Not this flood.

Extreme weather forced the station off air when it was needed the most.

Strong winds and heavy rain shut down the transmitter on Neusavale Rd and consequent flooding prevented technicians from carrying out repairs.

Emergency Management Queensland says a battery-powered radio is an essential item to have in an emergency survival kit.

The many residents who rely on radio to feed them vital information rather than websites or via social media were left in the dark during the weekend's extreme weather event.
