Budapest radio station Radiocafé (98.6 FM) ceased operations permanently on 17 May after national media authority NMHH withdrew its broadcasting permit over a Ft 24 million (€90,000) overdue debt. On 6 May Radiocafé was sold by Est Média - called Econet until the end of February - to a company connected to István Veres, operator of Zóna Taxi and owner of a club on top of Gellért Hill.
After Radiocafé went off the air, it issued a communique saying the overdue debt was a result of the difficult economic situation and the troubled market for radio advertisements. The station added the media authority withdrew their permit because it could not tolerate this debt any longer despite acting more understanding towards other media.
Radiocafé reached listeners in Budapest and its environs. According to Gfk-Ipsos, it had 13,000 daily listeners from the 15-49 years age group. In addition to Inforádió, it was one of the few Budapest radio stations which managed to increase the number of its listeners.
