RTHK records first radio show in prison

In cooperation with Hong Kong's Correctional Services Department, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) has, for the first time, produced a radio programme in the studio of a correctional institution for women.

The RTHK programme, "Devoted to You", is aimed at conveying positive messages to inmates and drumming up community support for offender rehabilitation. It has been on air for 11 years and is popular among the Hong Kong public, particularly correctional institution inmates and their relatives and friends.

However, it was the first time that the show was recorded in prison. The show's hosts Vivian Yip and Reverend Man Chi-on recorded the programme at the Lo Wu Correctional Institution (LWCI) on April 28.

During the show, the Acting Senior Superintendent of LWCI, Tam Pui-ha, told audiences about the correctional facility's operation and services. Two inmates were interviewed about their experiences. During the show, messages of encouragement from family members were broadcast and the hosts read out notes written by LWCI inmates on their thoughts on their rehabilitation.

Hong Kong singer/actress Joyce Cheng was also invited on the show. She encouraged inmates to stay away from a life of crime once and told them to focus on the time they would spend with their families upon their release.

RTHK Head of Communications Kirindi Chan said that the programme, which was aired last Sunday, was "very well received and lightened the hearts of many".
