Broadcasters learn to use e-learning platform

Broadcasters from nine countries gathered at a UNESCO-ABU workshop to learn how to use an online course management system to transfer knowledge to their peers.

The four-day workshop "Online Training on Radio Journalism and Production" in Kuala Lumpur, is focused on the theme of sustainable development reporting.

The 10 radio journalists are being trained to conceptualise and design radio training programmes on various sustainable development topics.

In turn, they will return to their respective countries to train 10 other would-be trainers on the principle issues of sustainable development and how to report those professionally.

After the workshop, the participants from the Asia-Pacific region will continue working on their course modules which will then be uploaded on ABU's Media Learning Centre-Online , which is based on Moodle, a free source e-learning software platform.

ABC-Australia's Learning Projects Manager Elizabeth Ellis, who is one of the workshop's trainers, said: "Moodle has been around for about 10 years and it's mostly been used by universities and schools. It's only recently that broadcasters have taken to using it for training staff.

"At the ABC, we have staff in 70 stations nationwide, some who are in remote regional areas, so it would be very costly to fly them in for training sessions held in the cities. With virtual classrooms, these staff can learn and practise at their own pace without having to be away from their stations," Ms Ellis said, pointing out the many applications for e-learning.

Media Development Consultant Rowan Reid is the other workshop trainer. The workshop ends today.
