The worst drought in 60 years is affecting people across the East and Horn of Africa. The combination of the drought and ongoing conflict has resulted in the UN declaring famine in parts of Somalia. This is an extraordinary crisis.
More than 3.6 million people are estimated to be directly affected within Somalia (over half the entire Somali population) and an additional 600,000 Somali refugees in neighbouring countries.
The international community has ramped up its efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to the region and is calling for worldwide funding support. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in partnership with other UN agencies and local and international NGOs, is responding to this crisis by providing vital relief such as food, nutritional support for malnutrition, shelter and medical assistance for the hundreds of thousands of refugees and displaced people under its care.
Australia for UNHCR is the local fundraising arm of the UNHCR and is calling on Australians to help.
