DAB Radio listening grows "Down Under"

The number of people listening to digital radio in Australia is growing, and about to surpass one million. Commercial Radio Australia released figures that show over 500,000 DAB Radios have been sold, this as the radio industry in Australia is nearing the second anniversary of full power digital radio service. Over the past year, the number of people listening to digital radio climbed from 523,000 to 940,000, and the sale of digital radio tripled, from 150,000 to over 500,000, reports AdNews. It quotes CRA Chief Executive Joan Warner as saying, "For the first time in our digital ad campaign we are mentioning a price point in conjunction with retailer Harvey Norman to highlight the fact that digital radios are affordable." Next, the CRA will extend the reach of its DAB+ system out from the major cities. The out-of-band DAB+ system used in Australia is not compatible with the U.S.-developed HD Radio.
