Community radio station Marlow FM is continuing normal programmes
despite being 14 inches below the water line of the River Thames.
Flood water has surrounded the building which the station is broadcast from and they currently have two petrol driven pumps sucking the river water out faster than it comes in.
Flood water has surrounded the building which the station is broadcast from and they currently have two petrol driven pumps sucking the river water out faster than it comes in.
“If these pumps fail we will be taken off air within minutes,” the station tells us.
Presenters are currently having to use Waders and Wellingtons to
reach the studio. If the river rises any more there is the possibility
that the site will be devoid of power and the station will have to
resort to emergency programming with the transmitter powered by
generator.
The station has informed Ofcom of the situation as a precaution.
Tim Ashburner says “we’re all being terribly British about this and
are pulling together in true Christmas spirit to keep MFM on air.
However in light of the possibility of this happening again in the
future we will have to look at relocating the transmitter elsewhere.”
Marlow FM covers Marlow and the surrounding area, including parts of
High Wycombe, Loudwater, Flackwell Heath, Bourne End, Cookham and
Hurley.
