SBS-Korea secures Olympic broadcast rights until 2024

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded Korea's SBS the exclusive local broadcast rights to Olympic Games until 2024, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The IOC said SBS has received rights to the 2018 Winter Olympics - the confirmation came just two days before the host city of the 2018 Winter Games is decided. The Korean city of PyeongChang and the German city of Munich are in the running alongside Annecy in France.

SBS has also been awarded broadcast rights to the 2020 Summer Olympics, 2022 Winter Olympics and 2024 Summer Olympics. It is the first broadcast deal with the IOC that goes through 2024.

SBS already owns the rights to the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics as well as the 2014 Winter Olympics.

According to the IOC, SBS has rights across all platforms, covering free-to-air television, subscription television, Internet and mobile services.

"We are delighted to continue our partnership with SBS through to 2024," IOC President Jacques Rogge said in a statement.

"SBS (has) been our broadcast partner in the region for many years and I would like to thank them for their commitment to the Olympic Movement."

German state broadcasters ZDF and ARD have also sealed broadcast deals for the Olympics for the 2014 and 2016 Olympics.

This was the first time the IOC negotiated the rights for Germany individually as opposed to through a broadcast union.
