Leopoldo González-Echenique, state attorney, appointed on June 30 by the Parliament as the new president of RTVE, is making the first changes in the current structure of the Spanish public service broadcaster. He has already appointed a new Director of Radio (Manuel Ventero), a new Director of Corporate Affairs (José Teófilo García Buendía) and a new director of TV news (Julio Somoano). The latter took office today. Further important changes are expected in the month of July, including the replacement of the Director of TVE.
The position of RTVE president had remained vacant for a whole year following the resignation in July last year of Mr Gonzalez-Echenique's predecessor, Alberto Oliart, after less than two years in office.
Mr Gonzalez Echenique is the third president of the Corporación RTVE, which replaced the old Ente RTVE at a very complex time for public television, with its annual budget cut by 204 million euros.
