India: Exemption in Spectrum Fee for Community Radio likely

Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has announced the possibility of exemption of spectrum fee for community radio.

The Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology Sh Milind Deora informed the Lok Sabha that the increase in Spectrum Charges for Community Radio is due to revision of spectrum charges with effect from 1st April 2012 for all captive users, including community radio stations.

In this regard representations have been received from various organizations including Community radio forums, requesting either exemption from paying spectrum fee or for roll back.

The Minister also highlighted of a high level Committee in Department of Telecom being constituted to look into the matter and the report for which has already been submitted by the Committe.
