FM radio stations throughout Pakistan are playing a key role in efforts to find peaceful solutions to local conflicts, an exercise that analysts say could help Pakistan tackle many of its problems. “The project is successful as 150 programmes were aired (so far) discussing local conflicts and trying to come up with local solutions,” Adnan Rehman, executive director of Islamabad-based Intermedia, told Central Asia Online. The independent FM radio stations have been airing Rabita – or Connect, a programme that discusses local conflicts and possible solutions.
The establishment of the Radio Partnership for Peace, the first initiative of its kind in Asia, occurred during a weekend summit of over 50 FM radio stations held in Islamabad last December. It was the largest summit ever of Pakistani FM radio stations since former president Gen. Pervez Musharraf allowed private radio stations to go on the air.
